New in the Netherlands? Haaglanden Medical Center helps you navigate the Dutch healthcare system

As an expat in a new country, you want to quickly understand how everything works – especially when it comes to your health. At Haaglanden Medical Center (HMC), with various locations in The Hague and the surrounding area, we understand that. That’s why we have a special expat liaison and an English-language website that guides you through the Dutch healthcare system, with information that suits your situation – and that of your family. We also organize English-language information sessions for embassies and international organizations.

Dr. Onno Guicherit, surgical oncologist, chairman of the Department of Surgery and expat liaison at HMC: ‘For over 20 years, we have been guiding expats and diplomats in the healthcare system in The Hague – the centre of government, embassies, many international organizations, and the Royal House. Together with our team, we ensure that you feel welcome and will easily find your way in the Dutch healthcare system.’

Getting used to a new healthcare system
For many expats, the Dutch healthcare system takes some getting used to at first. The general practitioner (GP) plays a central role and is, with few exceptions, the first point of contact. If necessary, the GP will refer you to a specialist in the hospital. Health insurance is mandatory for everyone living or working in the Netherlands, unless your international insurance provides sufficient coverage.

Don’t worry: HMC will help you get started. We explain what you need and how to arrange access to healthcare. If you have questions about reimbursements or other financial matters, you can contact Centrale Kas – our special information point in the hospital – or simply get in touch with us.

Clear explanation, also in English
Dr. Guicherit: ‘We offer information sessions in English, to provide a clear and accessible explanation of the Dutch healthcare system, and explain the difference with other countries. In conversations with expats who have lived here for a while, I often hear that they find the Dutch healthcare system easy and reliable. And rightly so: the Netherlands ranks second in the international Health Care Performance Ranking by The Commonwealth Fund. Healthcare is well organized and accessible to everyone.’
