Brussels’ finest in The Hague

Soyez le bienvenu, Belgian style. Café-brasserie Nationaal in The Hague serves no French clichés, but pure brasserie cuisine with a Belgian twist. An excellent pâté de campagne, a refreshing fennel and grapefruit salad, silky pointed cabbage with beurre blanc, and for dessert, a contemporary eggnog that’s anything but old-fashioned. Chef Jermaine Huisman presents a seasonal menu with Brussels as its central theme: cosmopolitan, classic and unpretentious all at once. The service is attentive and precise – without fuss, with flair. Inside, a warm interior awaits with tiled floors, Thonet chairs, and an impressive bar inviting you to a glass of Westmalle Dubbel; outside, the large sun patio beckons. Nationaal is located in a 17th-century corner house that once housed The Hague’s finest, and it still feels that way. A brasserie you hope to find, but rarely actually encounter.
