Breaking barriers: how Dutch Online helps expats truly learn Dutch

For many expats in the Netherlands, learning Dutch has been a challenging journey. You take a class, download an app, maybe attend a few live lessons, and yet progress often stalls around A1 level.
It’s not a lack of motivation or talent. The real problem is that traditional methods were never designed for expats’ busy, international lives.

Who we are
Dutch Online is an e-learning platform built with expats, for expats. Over the past six years, we’ve collected extensive feedback from thousands of learners to create a system that finally works.

Our platform is fully aligned with CEFR standards and designed to fit into real life: flexible, practical, and measurable.

What makes us different is the combination of structure and freedom, with the depth needed to truly master the language. Learners gain access to over 8,000 exercises, 6,800 audio files and 1,500 real-life sentences. No generic lessons. No rigid, expensive schedules. Just Dutch you can actually use, delivered in a modern way.

Expats often tell us they want three things:
• Learn at their own pace, without pressure.
• Dutch that is relevant to their daily lives and work.
• Certificates to prove their Dutch skills.

Dutch Online delivers all three. Learners quickly start to understand emails, documents, and conversations, while working towards official A1 and A2 certificates, with B1 and ‘inburgering’ coming soon.
We also provide live webinars and a WhatsApp support channel, so learners are never left alone.
And we don’t just support individuals. HR departments and international companies use Dutch Online to help their teams integrate faster and communicate more effectively.
Features such as seat-based user management, usage analytics and progress tracking give organisations full insight, while flexible subscriptions make scaling simple.
Later this year, Dutch Online will launch a mobile app for easier access, a full inburgering course, and even an AI-powered teacher that can provide instant feedback on pronunciation. Dutch Online continues to grow alongside our learners.

Our presence at the IamExpat Fair
On October 11, we’re proud to join the IamExpat Fair in The Hague for the first time.
At our stand, visitors can meet the team and explore how our platform can support both individual learners and international teams.

We’ll also be hosting a workshop, The Psychology of Learning Anything, led by our founder Kiran Bansi and tech lead Simon van der Ploeg. Both completed a double bachelor’s degree that includes psychology.
The session dives into why attitude and mindset matter more than talent, how motivation can be sustained, and which routines and strategies allow adults to learn almost as effectively as children. Expect practical insights, grounded in psychology and neuroscience, that you can use immediately in daily life.
Whether you’re an expat just starting out, or an HR professional supporting a diverse team, Dutch Online is here to help you break through the Dutch language barrier and enjoy the journey along the way.
