Welcome to the Rembrandt House Museum. Here, you encounter Rembrandt in his own home. At this address, right in the heart of Amsterdam, he lived and worked for nineteen years. Here he trained his pupils, received his customers, created his masterpieces and rose to greatness. Almost 400 years later, the Rembrandt House Museum is the only museum in the world completely dedicated to Rembrandt. Step back in time to the 17th century and be inspired by Rembrandt: the man, the artist, his home, his city and his time. You cannot get any closer to Rembrandt, than this.
Visitors are invited to discover the house and its famous resident with the free multimedia tour in thirteen languages. You will experience Rembrandt’s life story, from his move into the house as an ambitious society artist to his forced departure when he could no longer pay his debts. Every day, etching or painting demonstrations take place in the museum. Find out how the artist made his paints in the exact place where Rembrandt created his masterpieces: his studio. In the attic, you can (virtually) look over the artist’s shoulder and learn about Rembrandt’s etching techniques.
Rembrandt & Amsterdam
Until 7 September 2025
This year, Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary. The city has much to offer for residents and visitors alike. That was also the case in the old days. See Amsterdam through Rembrandt’s eyes and discover what had already made the city unique 400 years ago. Admire old buildings, unusual places and beautiful surroundings. Enjoy the art, culture and entertainment. Meet interesting people. Spot well-known Amsterdam residents. And find out whether the city already had a red-light district in the 17th century. See it all in this exhibition containing 60 prints and drawings from the collection of the Rembrandt House Museum.
Do it yourself
In our drawing studio, you can make a drawing just like Rembrandt did. Try it yourself in a few simple steps. Drawing tables, drawing materials, and an easy instruction are all set up for you. This activity is free, always available, and suitable for everyone 6 years and older. During the summer holidays, we also offer etching workshops. Put your own spin on an Amsterdam etching from the exhibition by experimenting with the drypoint technique! Using a large etching press, you’ll create two prints to take home with you.
Visit the museum with your family
Families visiting the museum can enjoy an engaging experience with daily etching or painting demonstrations and fun hands-on activities like drawing workshops. A special highlight is the free family multi-media tour (in English and Dutch) guided by Kwast, Rembrandt’s mischievous dog, who helps children and parents explore the museum to complete Rembrandt’s greatest painting. Though meant to stay in the courtyard, Kwast sometimes sneaks inside to sniff around. It’s a perfect day out for young art lovers and their families.
