Music Collective Amsterdam (MCA) presents a rare chamber-scale performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 on 29 November at 20:00, featuring a newly crafted 17-player orchestration by conductor Marc Aixa Siurana. The concert takes place at Studio Wieman in Amsterdam-Noord, a repurposed Mercedes garage whose industrial character creates an immersive and intimate setting for experiencing large-scale music up close.
The evening opens with MCA’s signature introduction with live musical examples, giving audiences an engaging and accessible way into Mahler’s sound world.
Mahler’s First Symphony, first performed in 1889 under the composer’s own baton, takes the listener on a journey that moves from calm, reflective moments to powerful, uplifting climaxes. In this chamber version, every detail becomes easier to hear, from the gentle solo lines to the bursts of energy that shape the music, making the symphony feel more personal and immediate.
Music Collective Amsterdam is a musician-led orchestra formed by Amsterdam-based players who reimagine major symphonic works through bespoke arrangements for smaller ensembles. Its members hold positions in the Netherlands Philharmonic, Residentie Orkest, Radio Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Noord Nederlands Orkest and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the ensemble has been featured on NPO Klassiek, at Klassiek op het Amstelveld, and at the Concertgebouw OPEN festival.
