Due to the ongoing corona crisis and the associated limitations, the Drents Museum in Assen has radically changed the exhibition program for the first half of 2021. The museum will postpone the major archeology exhibition Under the spell of Mount Ararat – Treasures from ancient Armenia to spring 2022. Henk Helmantel – Master Painter (very successful in the 8 weeks that the exhibition was open) will be extended until September 5, 2021. The Matthias Weischer – Bühne exhibition will be extended until June 27, 2021. From July 11, 2021, the program will include the Beyond Belief exhibition by artist Deborah Poynton, which was initially scheduled to start on April 18.
Decisive for postponement of the Armenia exhibition are the new corona measures that make it impossible for couriers to accompany the air transport of the objects from Armenia. In close consultation, the Drents Museum and the History Museum of Armenia in Yerevan (where the approximately 160 objects come from) have therefore agreed to postpone the exhibition from the previous starting date of March 28, 2021, to the spring of 2022. Helmantel fans can indulge themselves, because due to the postponement of Under the spell of Mount Ararat, the still lifes and church interiors of the Groningen master painter can still be seen until 5 September 2021.
Matthias Weischer also extended
Due to the lockdown, the exhibition Bühne by the artist Matthias Weischer has been on view to the public for only 4 weeks so far. For this reason, and in light of the corona developments, the museum has decided to extend Bühne, which was due to close on March 28. The approximately thirty paintings by one of the most striking representatives of German painting can now be seen in the Abbey Church until 27 June 2021. The exhibition Beyond Belief by South African artist Deborah Poynton will open at this location from 11 July. It will provide an overview of the monumental paintings that Poynton has made over the past ten years. The major Frida Kahlo exhibition Viva la Frida! – Life and art of Frida Kahlo remains unchanged on the agenda for this autumn.
